Krishnanagar (city)

Krishnanagar is the capital city and administrative centre of Nadia district in West Bengal. It is a historical and cultural city on the banks of the Ganges. The city is named after Krishna Chandra Roy (1710–1783), the Maharaja of Nadia, who played an important role in the politics of Bengal in the 18th century. Krishnanagar is well known for its art, literature, education and culture.

Ancient times

The Nadia region has been known for its education and culture since ancient times. Nabadwip was one of the major educational centers of Bengal and the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Krishnanagar developed as an important part of that historic Nadia district.

The Rule of the Royal Family

In the 18th century, Raja Krishnachandra Roy was one of the most famous rulers of Nadia. During his reign, art, literature and drama flourished in the Krishnanagar royal court. He is considered the pioneer of Bengali drama and patronized many writers and artists.

British rule

British rule in Bengal began after the Battle of Plassey in 1757. Although the royal family of Krishnanagar maintained good relations with the British, the city gradually developed as a centre of learning. Krishnanagar Government College, established in 1846, is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in Bengal.

Art and Culture

Krishnanagar is particularly famous for its clay puppetry. The intricate designs and lifelike clay puppets made in the Krishnanagar Ghurni region have been internationally acclaimed. The city also carries a tradition in theatre, music and folk culture.

Festivals

Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Jagaddhatri Puja, Ras Mela and Saraswati Puja are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Krishnanagar. Among these, Jagaddhatri Puja is well known as the traditional festival of Krishnanagar. We will explain the history of Jagadhatri puja later in this scetion.

Present

Currently, Krishnanagar is known as the headquarters of Nadia district. It houses the district court, administrative offices, educational institutions and cultural centers. Krishnanagar city stands as a blend of traditional culture and modernity.
